BISMARCK, ND - North Dakota’s Primary Election on Tuesday, June 11, gives people the opportunity to have a voice in who leads their cities, schools, counties, and state. Additionally, there is a statewide ballot measure and other city or county measures that voters will decide.

Primary elections determine which partisan, judicial, and county candidates move forward to the general election in November. City and school contests are final in the primary which means this election determines who will lead and serve at the local level. Every vote counts in the outcomes of these contests.

“Voter turnout for past primary elections has been disappointing,” said North Dakota Secretary of State Michael Howe. “Only 18.8% of eligible voters in North Dakota participated in the 2022 Primary Election. We are fortunate that we have the right to choose our leaders through fair, secure elections. Eligible voters in North Dakota have a responsibility and a right to choose who will best serve their communities."

To vote in North Dakota, you must be at least 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen, and a resident of North Dakota and your precinct for at least 30 days prior to the election.

A valid form of North Dakota identification is required to vote. This can be a North Dakota driver’s license, North Dakota non-driver ID, Tribal ID or letter, or long term care certificate. To streamline the voting process, you are encouraged to make sure your ID information is updated before election day if you have moved. Address changes to North Dakota driver’s licenses and non-driver IDs can be made online through the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) website or by calling 701-328-4353.

You can go to vote.nd.gov/myvotinginfo to find polling locations and times specific to their address and view a sample of their Primary Election ballot. If you are in line at a polling location when it closes, stay in line because you will still be allowed to vote.

If you are voting absentee, ballots need to be postmarked by June 10 or hand-delivered to the county auditor by 5:00 p.m. on June 10. You can vote at a polling location if you requested and received an absentee ballot but have not returned it. However, if you returned your absentee ballot, your voter record will show that you have already voted, and you will not be able to cast another ballot at a polling location.
